Past Phantom still turning heads

Published Monday June 27

R ubin Jurman is a spry 88-year-old lifelong resident of Los Gatos. He was the owner of San Jose’s City Metals Recycling which was founded by his father in 1927. Originally City Metals operated with only a single flatbed truck and a heavy rope, but it grew to become one of California’s largest recycling yrds and employers.

Being in the recycling business for seventy years Rubin regrets junking some cars, which were worth only a fraction of their current value at the time. These include a number of Packards, Cadillacs, Hudsons and Lincolns. While baling up thousands of cars over the years comes with the territory, Rubin admits with a wink to only ever baling up one employee.
